Makeup Myth #1 - I Don't Need a Budget for Makeup Services

The most common misconception about on-location services by Makeup by Keri Ann

Yes, makeup services, do need to be part of the budget.

If you want an exceptional, personalized service for your special event, you need to know how much you can afford to spend.

Having someone come to your location to do your makeup should cost more than you would pay to go to a department store.

You are paying for someone's time & talent and you are paying them to come to serve you, so you don't have to fight traffic, parking and crowds.

Convenience services are considered a luxury and the pricing should reflect that.

There are also charges you may not expect:
  • Many artists will charge more for airbrush makeup.
  • Many artists will only apply false lashes for an additional fee.
  • Many artists charge for travel.
  • Some artists will only travel on-location for a minimum number of clients.
It doesn't matter if you are needing services for a prom, birthday, wedding, girls night out, or photography sessions, on-location service pricing should be the same for each.

You will also need to be prepared to save your date with a contract and a retainer.

Before you contact artists and get sticker shock, do your homework and research what you are expected to pay at a brick & mortar location.  Once you have a baseline, then you need to calculate how much additional time you will need for traffic, parking, etc. - and don't forget to double that time, because you need to factor in a round trip visit.

Makeup Myth #7 - One Person Should Be Able To Do Hair & Makeup For Everyone

One person for hair and makeup bridal services
Makeup by Keri Ann Makeup Myth #7

It’s a fact that bridal parties have a budget.

It's not uncommon for photographers, videographers and photo booths to be separate vendors at a wedding and I am always confused why people assume wedding day beauty services should be bundled as one, when they are 2 distinct art forms.

Hairstylists and makeup artists are artists.  And while many makeup artists "can do hair", hair most likely is not their passion.  Many hairstylists "can do makeup", but the hairstylists I know, have a passion for hair and not for makeup.

I want you to look your best and to do a great job.  So do the hairstylists and other makeup artists I work with.  We all take pride in our work and we also want to allow time to get our work done perfectly.

Asking one person to do both services greatly limits the amount of time and attention the artist can spend with each client.  The most vocal one in the bridal party will probably get the most attention and this may cheat the bride out of her allotted time.  The wedding day is the bride's day to shine.

The smallest of details overlooked are the biggest to be noticed (ie, missing bobby pins & falling hair or false lashes that aren’t applied properly).

Hiring a makeup artist AND a hairstylist on your wedding day, actually can help with time, as 2 clients can be worked on at the same time vs only one person getting both services.

Consider the hair & makeup services as an investment in the wedding day memories.  Allow each artist, and client, the time to create a special and memorable look that will last all day and night.  (A common rule of thumb is to allow one hour for hair and one hour for makeup services - so that's 2 hours per/person for BOTH hair & makeup services.)

In the Houston area, many solo makeup artists, who also offer hair services, do not have the state license.   Be sure to ask about their hair license before you book with them.

Makeup Myth #8 - My BFF Can Do My Makeup

Makeup Myth

Or

Maybe it’s your sister doing your makeup.  Or maybe your cousin, friend or neighbor can do your makeup.

There are very many talented makeup enthusiasts out there.  And even if someone applies her makeup beautifully, she may not have the skills to apply makeup on other people.

Here are a few questions you want to ask:
  • Does your BFF understand how makeup looks in different lighting?
  • Does your BFF know how to compensate for poor lighting?
  • Does your BFF know how much time it will take to do your makeup & the others in the group?
  • Does your BFF work well under pressure?
  • Will your BFF be on time?
  • Does your BFF have enough clean brushes to do all the makeup you want done?
  • Will your BFF treat you like the princess you want to be on your special day?

If you are going to go with someone you know and trust to do your makeup, PLEASE do yourself a favor and do a trial run.

Make sure you have the makeup photographed (hopefully by a professional) and examine it before the day of your event.  You want to be happy with how your makeup looks in photographs before you commit to using friends and family members who may not be professionals.

There are so many hygienic problems that can happen if you select someone who doesn’t use clean and disposable tools.  Never “double dip” into eyeliners, mascaras or lipsticks that aren’t yours.

Friendships need to be stable enough to handle the stress of a special event - especially if the special event is a wedding.  Personality clashes and miscommunication can quickly put a damper on a special day (there is nothing worse than a cloud of jealousy or resentment in a room).

When your special event is over you want to remember feeling pampered and absolutely beautiful.

You never want to look back and regret your experience.
